China tells industries to slow the rollout of AI to limit job losses

China's State Council general office published an 18-point policy document on Oct 16 on keeping AI development friendly to jobs, state media reported.

What the document asks

  • Slow AI in labour-intensive industries
  • Use AI first in jobs short of workers or high-risk
  • Notice and redeployment help for affected workers

It asks that AI reach labour-intensive industries carefully, and that firms give affected workers notice and help moving to new jobs.

AI core industries are to be placed in the east, and data labelling or smart-device manufacturing in the central and western regions, to create jobs.
