A hydroelectric dam

Australia's Snowy 2.0 hydro project now expected to cost up to A$25 billion

2017 estimate

A$2 billion

Now

A$22.5 to A$25 billion

The estimate has grown from A$2 billion at the 2017 announcement to between A$22.5 billion and A$25 billion for completion in 2029.

What went wrong

The update blames the contractor's underestimate of the work, missed productivity targets and rising equipment and labour costs. The project is no longer on a fixed-price contract.

Planned storage

350,000 MWh

The pumped hydro plant is to provide 2,200 megawatts and 350,000 megawatt-hours of storage as backup for days of low wind and sun.
