France publishes a decree to release strategic diesel stocks

Hoped-for drop at the pump

12–18 euro cents a litre

The government hopes the sale will lower the price of diesel by 12 to 18 euro cents a litre.

The decree allows sales of up to 1.6 million cubic metres, about 10 million barrels, until Jan 31.

Distributors must pass the full price drop on to consumers and tell them before the sale. They may do so early, from Nov 1.

Background

Diesel has averaged 2.3 to 2.4 euros a litre since early October, the government says. A separate decree extends a 15-cent-a-litre aid for farm off-road diesel until December.
