US steel, not overseas dumping, dominates Canada's galvanized steel imports

Of 625,726 tonnes of galvanized and coated steel sheet imported in the first nine months of 2026, 54.1 per cent came from the United States.

Stelco's owner blames dumped overseas steel for idling its Hamilton plant, but a McMaster University economist says the latest trade data do not support that claim.

Imports from the United States and Mexico are exempt from Ottawa's steel import restrictions, which were tightened in December 2025.
