Canada signs a comprehensive trade deal with the UAE

Canadian exports with tariffs cut

99 % of current exports

Trade ministers Maninder Sidhu and Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi signed the agreement Tuesday. Once fully in force, expected in 2027, it cuts or removes tariffs on over 99 per cent of current Canadian exports to the UAE.

Sectors Ottawa names

  • Pulses and canola
  • Industrial machinery
  • Power generation equipment
  • Aerospace

Ottawa says the deal opens new markets for farmers growing pulses and canola, and for makers of machinery and power equipment.

And us?

The UAE is the largest Middle East market for Canadian exports. Two-way trade was worth $3.5 billion last year and has grown about 10 per cent a year.

Background

Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to double non-US trade over the next decade as US tariffs hit the economy. Attempts to reach a deal with Washington have broken down.
