Trans Mountain is ready to ship more oil once Ottawa's regulator says yes

Extra oil by year end

90,000 barrels per day

Trans Mountain expects to move another 90,000 barrels a day by the end of the year, once the federal regulator approves chemical additives that speed up the flow, CEO Mark Maki said Monday.

What's next

A second project adding 210,000 barrels a day is on track for 2028, which together would lift the pipeline's capacity from 890,000 to nearly 1.2 million barrels a day.

Bought in 2018

$4.5 billion

Cost at opening, 2024

About $34 billion

Ottawa bought the pipeline for $4.5 billion in 2018, and the expansion cost about $34 billion by the time it opened in May 2024; it now helps Canada sell more crude to Asia amid the US trade war.

Federal review of Pacific Link

Trans Mountain is also a partner in Pacific Link, Alberta's proposed bitumen pipeline to the West Coast, which could cost up to $43.7 billion and faces a federal review Ottawa expects to finish by Sep 1, 2027.

Maki said Ottawa wants to keep the ban on oil tankers off British Columbia's north coast, but that it could perhaps be lifted if the First Nations along that coast agreed and set conditions.
