3M to pay nearly US$7.35 billion to settle forever-chemicals injury claims

Over nine years

7.35 US$ billion

3M will commit nearly US$7.35 billion over nine years to settle personal-injury claims over PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals.

The deal covers about 99 per cent of current personal-injury claims. Between 115,000 and 120,000 plaintiffs are eligible, according to the company.

3M did not admit liability and expects a pre-tax charge of US$5.8 billion in the fourth quarter.

Background

In 2023, 3M reached a US$10.3 billion settlement with US public water systems over PFAS water pollution.
