Federal nuclear lab works on a fuel that could cut India's demand for Canadian uranium
The fuel, ANEEL, from Chicago-based Clean Core Thorium Energy, uses thorium and a type of uranium Canada does not produce. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, run day to day by an American-owned consortium, is helping develop it.
India has world-leading thorium deposits and sees ANEEL as a potential pathway to improve domestic energy security (by reducing imports from countries like Canada).

India's Candu-style reactors
21 of 25 reactors
Of India's 25 nuclear-power reactors, 21 are Candu-style models, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Candu was designed to run on minimally processed Canadian uranium.
And us?
Saskatchewan's Cameco signed a nine-year, $2.6-billion uranium supply deal with India during Prime Minister Mark Carney's trip there in March.
