Coffee prices stay volatile even as a big surplus approaches
Arabica price, per pound
3.50 US$
Exchange-certified stockpiles of arabica beans are at their lowest since 1999, pushing prices close to this year's highs, near US$3.50 a pound.
What we know
- A large surplus is expected
- Brazil may harvest a record crop
Not yet
- How many beans reach the exchange
The 2026-27 season is expected to bring the biggest surplus in years, helped by a possible record crop in Brazil. But growers are holding beans for better offers, and fewer are reaching exchange warehouses.
Why it matters
On Friday, coffee futures in New York rose as much as 5.6 per cent. Futures set the base price many roasters pay, so the swings can reach the price of a latte.
