Christine Lagarde could leave the European Central Bank early to chair the World Economic Forum

The forum's board, which includes Lagarde, meets on Nov 2 and could elect her as its next chair, four people close to the organization said. No final decision has been taken, and the board could instead set a date for a vote before the Davos meeting in January.

Why it matters

Lagarde's term at the bank ends in October 2027, and leaving early would let EU leaders pick her successor before France's spring presidential election. Polls suggest the far right could win that vote.

Former Dutch and Spanish central bank governors Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernández de Cos are seen as frontrunners to replace her. The ECB declined to comment, and the forum did not immediately respond.
