Fuel costs from the Iran war add up for US households ahead of the midterm elections
Gasoline
+45%
Diesel
+68%
On Friday, US gasoline averaged 45 per cent above its prewar level and diesel 68 per cent, according to the motoring group AAA.
Cost of the war per US household
2,000 US$
Economist Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics estimates the war has cost the average US household almost US$2,000, including US$1,100 in higher energy prices.
Airfares were about 22 per cent higher in September than a year earlier, as airlines raised prices and fees and trimmed schedules.
What's next
Many companies have absorbed part of their higher costs so far, but a September jump in wholesale prices suggests shoppers may pay more if fuel stays high.
