Volkswagen plans to freeze wages for its workers until 2030

Workers whose pay would be frozen

600,000 workers

An internal Volkswagen plan, Group Target Picture 2030, would freeze the pay of about 600,000 workers until 2030, including those at Seat. The German union IG Metall confirmed it.

“The Global Works Council anticipates strong resistance,” IG Metall said, adding that it had received internal Volkswagen information confirming the plans.

Volkswagen's restructuring

  • A wage freeze until 2030
  • Four plant closures
  • Half as many models
  • Possibly the end of the Seat brand

The freeze adds to a restructuring driven by Chinese competition and the costs of the shift to electric cars. It includes four plant closures and halving the group's models.

Lost purchasing power, IG Metall estimate

10 % or more

IG Metall estimates a freeze to 2030 would cut workers' purchasing power by 10 per cent or more. Unions in Spain reject it, and Italian unions say their contracts protect workers until 2028.
