Electric car plugged in to charge

GM to close its Brownstown battery assembly plant

The plant south of Detroit assembled battery packs for the Cadillac Celestiq and drive units and packs for the Corvette E-Ray.

What we know

  • GM leased the site
  • The lease was nearing its end

Not yet

  • Which facilities get the workers

GM says the closure is not about its EV strategy: it leased the site, and the lease was nearing its end.

Employees and work will move to other GM facilities, and the company says it still researches new battery chemistries.
