Virginia state senator L. Louise Lucas charged in alleged marijuana scheme

Lucas, 82, surrendered Thursday after an indictment alleging conspiracy to distribute marijuana, money laundering and bribery. Six co-defendants are charged, including two of her daughters and a grandson.

Alleged marijuana

100+ kilograms

Prosecutors allege she directed an enterprise that bought and sold more than 100 kilograms of illegal marijuana.

Today, the FBI, the Department of Justice, and the full weight of the federal government have been wielded against an 82-year-old great-grandmother.

Attorney General Todd Blanche said the timing, weeks before the November elections, was nothing improper. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger criticized it and noted Lucas is presumed innocent.
