Premier Abang Johari Openg said the governor agreed to dissolve Malaysia's Sarawak state assembly on Monday, Oct 26. An election must follow within 60 days.

The vote is not due until April 2027. Local media have floated Dec 12 or Dec 19 as polling dates, and the Election Commission will set the day.

Background

In the 2021 election the ruling GPS coalition won 76 of 82 seats. The assembly is expected to grow to 99 seats, but a review of the new boundaries is not expected to finish in time.

The vote tests Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, whose government leans on GPS support after setbacks for his coalition in Peninsular Malaysia.
