Ebola virus under an electron microscope

Attackers kill a nurse responding to an Ebola case in the DR Congo

The attack took place Saturday in Bafwasende, in Tshopo province, and another health worker was severely injured, the World Health Organization said. Local authorities have not commented.

Outbreak since May

9,800 cases, 4,700+ deaths

More than 9,800 cases, including more than 4,700 deaths, have been recorded since May, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country's history, according to the health ministry.

Responders say distrust, with some people dismissing Ebola as a hoax, hampers their work. Last month a politician was beaten to death in North Kivu after defending the response.
