Portugal's Montenegro comes under fire over the police clearing of housing protests

The Socialist Party wants Prime Minister Luís Montenegro to take responsibility and withdraw the rental bill now before parliament. Chega praised the police but said the state had cowered.

The solution is political, never police.

The PSD's Sebastião Bugalho said police acted proportionately. Liberal Initiative leader Mariana Leitão said repression is not acceptable and the protesters have reason on their side.
