London closes almost a kilometre of Oxford Street to traffic as pedestrianisation begins

No longer allowed in

• Taxis and private hire
• Private cars
• Cycles and scooters

The stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street is closed to buses, taxis, cars, cycles and scooters. Deliveries are allowed from midnight to 7 a.m.

"It is a truly momentous occasion for the capital," Mayor Sadiq Khan said. Critics say the scheme is rushed and may push traffic onto nearby streets.

What's next

By the end of spring 2027, the street should have more than 50 new trees and two new public squares.
