Rock debris after a landslide

Penang landslide kills a doctor and halts hillside construction

The landslide hit a two-storey house in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, at about 8:36 a.m. Sunday. A 73-year-old doctor was trapped and died, while two others escaped.

Penang Island City Council ordered a halt to condominium construction and roadworks on the hillside nearby. Six houses were told to evacuate.

What we know

  • Stabilisation work was unfinished at the slide
  • A stop-work order is in place

Not yet

  • The cause, still under investigation
  • Whether the works played a role

Officials say slope stabilisation work was unfinished where the ground gave way. Early findings point to a leaking pipe and clogged drains.

Environmental group Sahabat Alam Malaysia said the risk was foreseeable after extensive hill-cutting, and called on the state to explain.
