Pope's South American trip goes ahead after lung cancer surgery

The Vatican says Pope Leo, 71, will visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru in November as planned. He had a tumour removed from his right lung in Rome on Oct 13.

The tour covers 10 cities, including Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Lima. The Pope says he looks forward to it "with great joy and enthusiasm".

Background

He spent years in Peru as a missionary and holds Peruvian citizenship. Chiclayo, where he lived, is a stop.
