Thousands of observers will watch US polling places on Election Day

Justice Department monitors

1,000 staff in every state

The Justice Department plans its largest-ever election monitoring effort, with about 1,000 staff sent to every state. The Republican National Committee has staff in 22 states and has enlisted nearly 22,000 poll workers.

State Democratic parties

About 10,000

Common Cause

About 16,000

Democratic groups have trained tens of thousands of volunteers, including about 10,000 from state parties and roughly 16,000 from Common Cause.

Why it matters

Officials from the Justice Department and the military say they have no plans to send immigration agents or troops to polling sites. Some local officials are still preparing for trouble, and some worry that so many groups could cause confusion outside polling places.
