A Polish city and region cut ties with Lviv over its “Year of the UPA” decision

On Oct 20, the Lviv regional council voted to name 2027 the year of Roman Shukhevych, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and Oleh Olzhych. Polish authorities criticized the decision at once.

Votes to end the 2004 agreement

Lublin's regional assembly voted to end a cooperation agreement with the Lviv region that had run since 2004 on trade, science, education and culture. Its marshal, Jarosław Stawiarski, said Lviv had not given up honouring people who killed Poles.

Przemyśl city council voted 21 to 0 to suspend its partnership with Lviv, and the mayor is to take legal steps to end the 1995 agreement. Cooperation would resume if the Lviv council withdraws its resolution and Lviv's authorities distance themselves from initiatives that “glorify” groups responsible for crimes against civilians.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made clear he would not support further steps by the Lviv council on the 2027 resolution. The Wrocław city council also unanimously condemned the decision.
