Freight truck on a road

Mexican truckers strike over highway security

On Monday, truckers' groups partly closed lanes on the highways into Mexico City, including the Querétaro, Pachuca and Toluca roads, in a national strike. They demand safer federal roads after robberies, assaults, killings of drivers and extortion.

400+ trucks at Cancún

In Cancún, more than 400 cargo trucks lined Highway 307 near the airport, and by midday the queue stretched over two kilometres.

Protest leaders in Quintana Roo say they want dialogue, not blockades, and the airline VivaAerobús warned of slow traffic to the airport while flights ran on schedule.

What the truckers want

  • Action on cargo and truck theft
  • Protection from killings of drivers
  • An end to extortion and corruption
  • Faster federal permits and licences
  • No cut to the toll tax break

The truckers also demand an end to corruption, faster federal permits and a reversal of the cut in the toll tax break in the 2027 budget package.
