First international flight leaves Western Sydney Airport

Air New Zealand's NZ166 left for Auckland at 9:17 a.m. local time on Monday, the first international departure from Western Sydney International Airport, which opened to passengers on Sunday. The airline will fly the route three times a week.

A traveller from Sweden, flying back from Melbourne, landed at the new airport without realizing it. One man off the flight from Auckland said he thought he was heading to Western Australia and was "meant to be in Perth".

Flights to follow

  • Singapore
  • Nadi, Fiji
  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Doha

Seven airlines have signed up to fly from the airport, with Singapore, Nadi, Ho Chi Minh City and Doha to follow. There are no direct flights between Perth and the airport.

Getting there

A metro line from St Marys to the airport was not finished by opening. Until the rail link opens, buses and a free shuttle from the station are the main public transport options.
