Egyptian editor Lina Attalah is detained after a court orders Mada Masr closed
Fine, the maximum penalty
3M Egyptian pounds
A court convicted Attalah of running an unlicensed website, fined her 3 million Egyptian pounds and ordered the outlet closed. She is held until she pays.
Mada Masr says it repeatedly sought a licence since 2018 and was rejected or ignored. Her lawyer says the judge appointed a defence lawyer she objected to.

Amnesty International calls it "a crushing blow to press freedom" and wants it overturned. Egypt holds 25 journalists in jail, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
