Scientists say climate change must be declared a global health emergency

Heat caused three million deaths between 2016 and 2023, the Lancet Countdown report said. Researchers attribute 68 per cent of them to climate change.

A record 710,000 heat-related deaths were counted in 2023, and more than 70 per cent of them are linked to human-caused climate change.

Lost income from heat, 2025

1.07 trillion US$

Heat exposure caused US$1.07 trillion in lost income in 2025, the report found, with low- and middle-income countries hit hardest.

Progress

Clean energy investment reached US$2.1 trillion in 2025, double the amount for fossil fuels, which still supply about 80 per cent of global energy.
