The EU unveils a climate resilience law for extreme weather

Member states would have to publish national plans and assess climate risks more often. The law sets a common warming path of 1.5°C by 2030, 2°C by 2050 and 3°C by 2100.

Economic damage, 2022 to 2025

200 billion euros

Extreme weather caused an estimated 200 billion euros in economic damage in Europe between 2022 and 2025, the European Commission says.

Also planned

  • European Heatwave Plan
  • European Water initiative
  • Climate Insurance Alliance
  • Support for 100 vulnerable territories

The package also plans a heatwave plan, a water initiative and a climate insurance alliance, since only a quarter of catastrophe losses are privately insured.

What's next

Several measures are expected in 2027, and an EU-wide resilience plan is scheduled for 2028.
