South Africa keeps soldiers in Durban as anti-migrant unrest continues

Soldiers deployed

510 in KwaZulu-Natal

President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered 510 soldiers into KwaZulu-Natal province to support police.

Violence has continued despite the deployment, and police say a foreign national was allegedly beaten to death in Durban's city centre.

The unrest followed false claims about a July Constitutional Court ruling on asylum seekers, and local elections are set for Nov 4.

Opposition candidates say the deployment has not restored confidence, and a coalition of 160 groups alleges police failed to stop some attacks.
