Strikes on a Darfur market kill more than 100, a rights group says

Dead, per a rights group

100+ killed, 113 wounded

Emergency Lawyers counts more than 100 dead and 113 wounded in Monday's drone strikes in Nyala, South Darfur, most of them women and children.

What we know

  • Drone strikes hit Nyala on Monday evening
  • A hospital got 36 bodies, 21 in civilian clothing

Not yet

  • The real toll: Sudan Doctors Network says 21 dead
  • How many were fighters and how many civilians

The toll could not be independently verified, and another group reports far fewer deaths.

Witnesses say the market was busy with Rapid Support Forces fighters, and that vendors were among the dead. An army-aligned spokesperson said more than 150 militia recruits were killed at a camp west of Nyala.

Doctors Without Borders called the strikes appalling. The UN says drone strikes are now the leading cause of civilian deaths in a war in its fourth year.
