UN General Assembly votes to condemn the US embargo of Cuba despite a US lobbying push

The vote

130 in favour 17 opposed

The resolution passed with 130 countries in favour and 17 opposed, including the US and Israel. The General Assembly has voted to condemn the embargo annually for more than three decades.

Another 25 countries abstained, including Germany and Italy, which had previously voted in favour. US ambassador Mike Waltz said the shift shows diplomacy at work.

Cuba's foreign minister said the US was "once again isolated in its attempt to continue strangling the Cuban people". Cuban officials accused the US of threatening countries with tariffs and visa restrictions.
