South Korean prosecutors seek the death penalty for ex-president Yoon

Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law on Dec 3, 2024, and sent soldiers and police to parliament. Lawmakers voted it down and it was withdrawn about six hours later.

At an appeal hearing in Seoul, a prosecutor said there was "no reason to hesitate" over a death sentence.

Yoon was sentenced to life in prison in February for leading an insurrection. His lawyers say he meant to warn parliament, not set up authoritarian rule; South Korea has not carried out an execution since 1997.
