Binance hack grows to US$6.3 billion, record crypto theft

Stolen from Binance, the largest crypto theft on record

6.3 US$ billion

Hackers stole US$6.3 billion from Binance, the world's biggest crypto exchange, in a theft that analysts call the largest in history.

About half the assets were quickly frozen by stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle. Binance says user funds are safe and it will cover every loss.

Two blockchain analysis firms, TRM Labs and Chainalysis, say they are highly confident North Korea is responsible. Binance says its investigation has not attributed blame, and North Korea routinely denies such attacks.

What we know

  • About US$3 billion located and frozen
  • Withdrawals halted, resuming within 48 hours

Not yet

  • Status of the other US$3.3 billion
  • Who is behind the hack

Binance expects to resume withdrawals within 48 hours; it has not said what happened to the remaining US$3.3 billion.
