Machado calls for Venezuelan elections in 2027
In her first remarks since returning from more than 10 months in exile, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate said a transition in Venezuela would be irreversible, organised, pacific.
“
“I come to carry out a task and complete a mandate.”
— María Corina Machado
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez said elections would be held but gave no date. She said she had told security agencies that no one be detained without a judicial order, except for flagrant crimes.
Background
The US seized Nicolás Maduro in January, and Rodríguez has ruled since. Machado said she has had no message from Rodríguez or Washington about a meeting, and criticized a recent US oil deal for lacking transparency.
