Édouard Philippe placed under assisted-witness status in funds probe

The former prime minister was questioned all day Thursday by two financial investigating judges in a Paris probe into alleged misuse of public funds, favouritism and psychological harassment at Le Havre's urban community.

What it means

Assisted witness

An assisted witness has a status less incriminating than being formally placed under investigation. It can change if new evidence emerges.

Édouard Philippe welcomes this favourable decision, which confirms there is nothing to reproach him for in this case.

The case began with a complaint from Cornélia Findeisen, a former deputy director of the urban community, over a 2020 funding agreement worth 2.154 million euros. Her lawyer said the facts appear serious.
