US ambassador says Washington is watching Canada for election interference

Pete Hoekstra, the US ambassador to Canada, said on a podcast that the US is “closely watching Canadian activities” before the Nov 3 midterm elections. If any of it becomes election interference, he said, “America will respond to it.”

What the ambassador pointed to

  • Joly on targeting tariffs at sensitive states
  • Ontario's anti-tariff TV ad in the US
  • Justin Trudeau's criticism of the Trump administration

He cited Industry Minister Mélanie Joly's talk of targeting retaliatory tariffs at politically sensitive states, Ontario's TV ad against US tariffs last year, and recent remarks by former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Canada would never do that

Mélanie Joly said Canada “would never do that” and would never accept it being done to Canada. She said her trips to the US were to attract investment.

Background

Trump adviser Peter Navarro made similar warnings last month, as Republicans face difficult midterm races. Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade talks with the US in August.
