The annual event honours victims of Stalin-era repression, with names read aloud, in person and online. Its website lists 101 cities this year, 15 of them in Germany.

Memorial, the group that began the event in 2007, was liquidated in Russia in 2021. This year, independent commemorations were held in Russia for the first time since the ban, according to reports, in the Irkutsk region, Kirov and Veliky Novgorod.

Diplomats from Sweden, Czechia, the Netherlands, Poland and other countries came to the Solovetsky Stone in Moscow. Last year the event was held in 150 cities.
