Ex-president Joseph Kabila now leads a rebel movement against his successor
Kabila, 55, was named leader of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation earlier this month, confirming what many Congolese believed: that he works with the M23 rebels. The M23 seized much of eastern DR Congo last year, including Goma and Bukavu.

— Joseph Kabila, on President Félix Tshisekedi
What we know
- Kabila leads the FRN and works with the M23
- The C64 opposition coalition will not back him
Not yet
- Whether the rebels can oust Tshisekedi
- How far Kabila's national reach extends
It is far from certain the rebels can oust President Félix Tshisekedi, and an opposition coalition has refused to back the rebellion.
Kabila faces a death sentence after being convicted in absentia of treason, and US sanctions over his alleged support for the M23. An analyst says he was left with few other options.
