Poland's president declares constitutional order violated and calls emergency talks

Tonight, there was a violation of the constitutional order of the Republic of Poland and a forcible takeover of a constitutional state body.

— President Karol Nawrocki

Nawrocki cut short a visit to Senegal and spent hours inside the Constitutional Tribunal overnight, telling judges he does not recognize: "You are not judges." The standoff began Friday when one of those judges announced the suspension of the tribunal's president and vice-president.

He then asked police to leave the grounds and let the vice-president he recognizes enter. He called urgent talks with parliamentary parties on Saturday, citing a threat to internal security.

Poland's ambassadors to China and Romania have resigned over the crisis. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said the government will keep upholding the Constitution.
