UAE says it has contained oil spill from damaged tanker

Authorities said Friday they have detected no fresh leakage from the tanker Gem No. 2, as teams repair damaged sections and assess the vessel's structural integrity.

Satellite imagery shows the oil slick concentrated off Umm Al Quwain, extending partly toward Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Sharjah. Pollution intensity has declined noticeably, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said.

Beaches in Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah are closed as a precaution. Officials say drinking water and fish in local markets are safe.

Authorities have not said what caused the tanker incident or when it occurred.
