Fighting near the Ethiopian border town of Moyale pushes tens of thousands of people into Kenya
Crossed into Kenya
36,000 people, per the UN
The UN said Tuesday that 36,000 people had crossed into Kenya, mostly women and children.
The fighting stems from a territorial dispute between the Oromia and Somali regional administrations in Ethiopia.
Gunfire could be heard across the border on Friday, while the UN refugee agency and the Kenya Red Cross provide medical care, food and shelter.
Why it matters
Local leaders in Kenya's Marsabit County warn the arrivals could overwhelm communities already short of food and water.
