North Korea's state news agency, KCNA, said the missiles were fired Wednesday into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, as a navy training exercise.

Angled launch

Harder to intercept

Photos showed one missile launched vertically and another at an angle; an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification said vertical launches can extend range, while angled ones are harder to intercept.

Background

Tensions have risen since a Sep 21 landmine blast in the Demilitarized Zone injured three South Korean soldiers, and both Koreas have since tested hypersonic missiles.
