North Korea tests a cluster-bomb warhead for tactical ballistic missiles

North Korea's state media said its Missile Administration tested the warhead on Saturday to assess its combat adaptability and power. South Korea's military said the missile flew toward the Yellow Sea from near Chongju.

Claimed target area

12–13 hectares

State media said the Standard Type 2 warhead can destroy a target area of 12 to 13 hectares at its highest density.

“Within this year we will enable units to select and use all those types according to operational aims and specific features of targets.”

Background

North Korea said in April it tested cluster bombs on the Hwasong-11 Ra missile, which a South Korean analyst said this one appeared to be. The test came as the US, South Korea and Japan again called for North Korea's complete denuclearization.
