Opposition parties, student groups and the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party have protested almost daily since late September, calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to step down. Sunday's march, led by Rahul Gandhi, went from central New Delhi to Ramlila Maidan.

Hundreds of police, some with batons and shields, were posted around the rally site, along with riot-control vehicles. Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda called the rally "a calculated conspiracy to plunge the nation into anarchy."

The Election Commission denies favouring any party and says voters wrongly removed from the lists may register again. Analysts call the protests and growing opposition support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's most serious political crisis since 2014.
