Protests erupt in India's Manipur after two missing Kuki men are found dead
Senapati district
Manipur, northeast India
The bodies of the two men, aged 20 and 21, were found on Sunday in Senapati district during a search by police and security forces. They had gone missing from Taphou Kuki village last week.
Protesters blocked roads and threw stones at security forces in neighbouring Kangpokpi district, and police fired tear gas to disperse them. More security forces were deployed on Monday.
The committee's demands
- Removal of Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho
- Village moved to Kangpokpi police
- Case sent to the National Investigation Agency
- Arrest of those responsible
The Committee on Tribal Unity says the bodies will not be taken for final rites until its demands are met, including the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho.
Background
More than 50 people have been killed since clashes between Kuki and Naga communities began in February. Earlier violence between Meiteis and Kukis in the state killed more than 300 people.
