Ebola virus under an electron microscope

Ebola outbreak in DR Congo kills more than 5,300 people

Ebola deaths, Africa CDC count

5,376 deaths

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention counted 5,376 deaths on Monday: 5,372 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and two each in Kenya and Uganda.

The strain behind the outbreak

Bundibugyo

The outbreak, the DRC's 17th and largest, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which has infected some 10,444 people with a death rate of more than 50 per cent.

Beyond the DRC

  • Uganda: 20 cases, Ebola-free since August
  • Kenya: nine infections and two deaths in October
  • Nigeria: one imported case, no deaths
  • France: one health worker, in July

The virus has crossed borders several times: Kenya recorded its first Ebola cases in October, and Nigeria reported its first imported case in more than a decade.

What we know

  • No approved treatment or vaccine for Bundibugyo
  • Ervebo works against the Zaire strain
  • Ervebo trials began in recent weeks

Not yet

  • Whether Ervebo protects against Bundibugyo

There is no approved treatment or vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, and clinical trials of the Ervebo vaccine, effective against the more common Zaire strain, began in recent weeks.
