European troops rehearse a postwar Ukraine deployment in Poland

Soldiers training in Poland

2,800 soldiers

About 2,800 soldiers from ten countries, led by Britain and France, will train in Poland this month.

The force would deploy only after a ceasefire, to help rebuild Ukraine's armed forces, reopen its skies and clear mines in the Black Sea. It is not a NATO force or a peacekeeping mission.

What we know

  • Deployment only after a ceasefire

Not yet

  • Whether a ceasefire will come
  • Whether France's next leader backs it

Ceasefire talks have stalled, and French presidential candidates including Marine Le Pen oppose sending troops.
