US urges Venezuela to free remaining political prisoners

The State Department says it remains committed to a three-phase plan for Venezuela.
Many detainees were arrested after the 2024 election, which Nicolás Maduro was declared to have won despite opposition tallies suggesting otherwise. A UN fact-finding mission found the government orchestrated harsh repression of dissent.
After US forces seized Maduro, Delcy Rodríguez became interim president and promised elections without giving a date. Opposition leader María Corina Machado is pressing for a vote within the next year.
