Strait of Hormuz seen from space

Attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz reach a weekly record

Ships reporting attacks, Oct 5 to 11

12 ships

Twelve vessels reported attacks in and around the strait from Oct 5 to 11, the most in a week since the US-Israeli war with Iran began, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency. Six were struck on a single day.

Experts say Iran is trying to assert greater control over the waterway as US forces escort more tankers through it. Strikes are also reaching ships near the coasts of Gulf Arab states and in the Gulf of Oman.

12.6 million barrels a day

About 12.6 million barrels of oil a day went through the strait on Oct 13, down from 15 million at the end of September and some 17 million before the war, according to the trade data firm Kpler.

The container ship GFS Pride sank in the strait Tuesday after a strike, and its 21 crew were evacuated safely. Two Indian seafarers are still missing after a drone hit the tanker Petro Dolphin off Oman on Sunday, a seafarers' union said.
