Eby defends a draft plan to cap forestry compensation in First Nations land transfers

Confidential documents show his government planned to transfer about 400 parcels of Crown land to First Nations in British Columbia, while limiting compensation for forest companies with timber rights on them.

Eby, the NDP leader, says the transfers reflect existing treaties and reconciliation commitments, and the draft bill was about reducing costs for taxpayers.

Companies would receive no compensation at all if less than five per cent of their logging rights were transferred, a spokesperson for the Eby campaign said.

The briefing notes, dated Sep 10, surfaced days before the provincial election on Oct 24. The campaign says the proposal was a draft, not final legislation.
