Britain threatens a visa ban on all Eritreans over migrant returns

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said on Thursday that all Eritreans could be barred from the UK unless Eritrea takes back more small-boat migrants and convicted criminals. Eritrean VIPs and officials have already lost fast-track access to UK visas.

Of the 2,626 Eritreans whose asylum claims were rejected in the past four years, fewer than 4 per cent have been deported, according to the British government.

Eritrean diplomats in the UK may no longer travel more than 60 km beyond London without Foreign Office permission. Eritrea withdrew its cooperation on returns earlier this year, and other countries could face similar visa limits, the home secretary said.

Eritreans were the most common nationality arriving in the UK by small boat in the year ending June 2026. President Isaias Afwerki has ruled Eritrea since independence in 1993, and the country has never held a national election.
